Keeping track of employment law, best practice and other human resource issues can be a real headache. With the best will in the world, you know you cannot be an expert on everything, that is why you have the BMA right behind you to give expert advice and support. However, it is important to understand the principles of employment law, the Health and Safety at Work Act and practical management of people issues to ensure a good working environment and that you do not find yourselves facing a legal challenge.

The BMA is offering 2 one-day courses introducing GP practices to Managing change and Managing performance.

Cost to attend
Registration is open to GP Partners or their Practice Managers and the registration fees are as below:

BMA Members: £110.00 + VAT (£19.25), total £129.25
Non-Members: £160.00 + VAT (£28.00), total £188.00*

Priority will be given to BMA members who wish to attend.

Any Practice Manager wishing to attend will pay the same registration fee as their GP Partner, depending on whether they are a member or non-member of the BMA.

*If any non-members join the BMA, before the date of the course they have registered to attend, then we will refund you the difference of £50.00 (+ VAT) between the member and non-member rates.

The registration fee includes access to the course, refreshments and lunch and course materials.

Dates and venues
The courses are taking place throughout England during the year and you are welcome to attend the course which is most convenient to you. Please see the details relating to each course. Please note that places on each course are limited and bookings are taken on a first come, first served basis.

Managing change
As an employer you need to be able to handle change among staff fairly and consistently. Ensuring good practice around recruiting new staff, dealing with employment matters and terminating employment is vital in terms of generating a good working environment and improving staff morale. Understanding the nature of the employment contract, and its wider implications, is an important means of overcoming difficulties at an early stage.

Managing performance
Common sense dictates that if you employ people, you want to ensure value for money by getting the most from your staff. Those who feel valued and who are fairly and consistently treated will have a higher level of commitment to their employer and the community you serve. As an employer, you need to understand your legal duties in terms of handling performance and work-related problems appropriately.
