Board of Science

Our key objectives are to promote the medical and allied sciences, contribute to the development of effective public health policies and to support medical research.

We maintain an influential role in forming public and government opinion on a range of health-related topics. We analyse and review critical issues of interest to the profession, and to the public health, and seek to influence government policy makers with evidence-based recommendations for action. We monitor government legislation and consultations, and lobby for changes to address inequalities in public health and healthcare.

Many of our publications and information resources provide educational and CPD materials for students and doctors. We award research grants every year to support and encourage doctors in various fields of medical research. The Board is also responsible for the BMA Library, including the annual medical book prizes.
  • Science at the heart of healthcare

The Board today continues the work begun by the earlier scientific committees, but with a broader remit: to act not only on behalf of the medical profession but also to reach a wider audience, including stakeholders, academics, policy makers and the general public.
