A career in academic medicine offers exciting opportunities for doctors to contribute to the health and wealth of the nation through research, in addition to playing a leading role in teaching and mentoring the next generation of doctors.

The BMA’s Medical Academic Staff Committee (MASC) is organizing another one-day conference on “Clinical Academic Training” to take place on Saturday 22 November 2008 at BMA House, Tavistock Square, London, WC1H 9JP. Entitled “Reflections on progress” this conference will be a follow-on from last year’s extremely successful and popular event.

Conference objectives:
The conference aims to provide a national forum for academic trainees and key stakeholders. Its objectives are to:
  • Give practical advice to trainees who are interested in or have secured an academic post
  • Engage with trainees and get their views on the new career pathway and on areas of uncertainty
  • Bring together key stakeholders with academic trainees
  • Nurture young academics by providing an opportunity for them to meet with other trainees and senior academics
Format and speakers:
The conference comprises of plenary presentations from key stakeholders, workshops and ample opportunities for discussion. Presentations will include:
  • The role of the National Institute for Health Research in academic training
  • Implementing the ACF programme
  • Pay and conditions for academic trainees
  • Academic and clinical progression
  • Funding research throughout your career
Speakers already confirmed include: Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, Chief Executive Officer, Medical Research Council, Dr John Williams, Head of Clinical Activities, The Wellcome Trust and Professor Jim Neilson, Dean of National Institute for Health Research Trainees.

Target audience:
The conference will be of interest to academic trainees, especially Academic Clinical Fellows, those undertaking PhD studentships, Clinical Lecturers and those undertaking Foundation Academic Programmes. Senior academics are also encouraged to attend.

Registration fees:
BMA Members: Free-of-charge
BMA Members may attend this event free-of-charge and their economy travel expenses will also be reimbursed.

Non-Members: £100.00 (including VAT)
Travel expenses will not be reimbursed. However, the registration fee will be waived and economy travel expenses reimbursed for Non-Members should they join the BMA before the conference.

Delegates will receive a delegate pack on arrival at the conference, refreshments and lunch will also be provided.

Please return the registration form as soon as possible, and no later than Monday 17 November 2008.

Last year’s conference was fully booked within the first couple of weeks, so in order to avoid disappointment at the 2008 conference please book your place as soon as possible.
