Academic Clinical Fellowship recruitment 2008

November 2007

Guidance on 2008 ACF recruitment in England
The BMA’s Medical Academic Staff Committee (MASC) and the Junior Doctors Committee (JDC) have been working with other stakeholders on the Department of Health Research & Development “Task and Finish Group” to agree the arrangements for recruitment to Academic Clinical Fellowship (ACF) posts commencing in 2008.

ACFs are specialty training posts that incorporate academic training. ACFs spend 75% of their time undertaking specialist clinical training and 25% undertaking research or educationalist training. The posts are aimed at those who show outstanding potential for a career in academic medicine or dentistry at the early stages of specialty training.

Timetable of ACF recruitment:
12 November 2007 Posts advertised in national and local press
26 November 2007 Deadline for applications
December 2007 to January 2008 Shortlisting and interviews
25 January 2008 Posts should be offered

National Guidance on recruitment, including entry, eligibility and exit, and a national application form has now been agreed and can be accessed at http://www.nccrcd.nhs.uk/intetacatrain/2008recruitmentprocessacfs

Candidates should review the national guidance and contact the relevant deanery to confirm the availability of the post and to find out about the application procedure and timetable. Detailed Information about ACFs, specialties available in 2008 and the University/NHS trust/Deanery partnerships can be found at http://www.nccrcd.nhs.uk/intetacatrain/acflistavailable08.

One of the referees for each applicant should be able to advise the recruitment panel of the candidate’s academic strengths and weakness. More information about academic referees can be found at http://www.nccrcd.nhs.uk/intetacatrain/2008recruitmentprocessacfs

Making an application for an ACF does not preclude an application for non-academic specialty training.
